I love turning throw away stuff into usable things. There are a lot of different things to be done with empty tins, big or small, round or flat. Here I used a coffee tin to create a CD holder for my desk. Follow our easy step by step instructions and you can make your own too!

What you will need:

  • Empty 750g coffee tin, washed and dried
  • 4x plastic drinking straws, or, thin plastic tubing
  • Scissors to cut metal
old coffee tin drinking straws

Step 1

Cut the tin in half. You will need to cut down the length of the tin, as well as around the base and top - you need to make sure that the lid will stay on and that the tin has a firm base.

Step 2

Using a scissors, slit the straws length ways. Make sure not to cut the straw in half when doing this, the straws will prevent you from cutting yourself on the sharp edges of the tin.

Step 3

Push the open end of the split straws along the rough edges of the cut coffee tin. This will give your CD rack a smooth edge so that you don't scratch or cut yourself..

Step 4

Your complete CD/DVD holder should look something like this:

Ideas:

For added decoration, glue some beads or other decorations onto the tin.

Why not make a few tins and decorate each one according to the different types of music in your collection? For example:

  • Decorate one tin with images of your favourite pop stars for your pop music
  • Decorate another with laughing faces for your comedy DVDs
  • Keep going until you run out of coffee tins!
