Working with clay is a great way for kids to learn to mould and sculpt, as well as teaching fine motor skills and exercising the hands.
Mix flour and salt in a bowl. Add warm water gradually and mix well.
Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough to about 5mm thick.
Use a cookie cutter to cut out the heart shape or use your hands to mould it.
Use a skewer stick or straw to cut out a little hole in the top of your heart so as to be able to thread the ribbon through.
Lay a piece of tin foil down into a baking tray and sprinkle it with flour.
Place your shapes onto the baking tray making sure they do not touch. Bake at 180˚C for at least 35 minutes.
Remove from oven and leave to cool down for at least two hours. The drying process is part of the hardening process and you should leave it to cool down properly.
You can now paint your tags with a water based paint.
When you are done painting, leave it to dry and then apply at least one coat of modge podge or varnish to protect it.
If you would like to write a message on the heart, you can do so with liquid lead or pearl based fabric paint.
Tie the tag to your gift when wrapping it.
How about making your own gift box?
