How to make your own embellishments with polymer clay

Polymer Clay Embellishments Using Silicone Moulds

A fun, hands-on clay project for creative play and decoration

This project uses colourful polymer clay pressed into silicone moulds to create small decorative embellishments. It’s a tactile, playful activity that children enjoy because it involves rolling, pressing, and shaping clay by hand.

The finished pieces can be used for scrapbooking, decorating picture frames, or adding detail to other craft projects.

Skill level: Beginner
Age suitability: 7+ with adult supervision
Supervision note: Adult assistance required for oven use and baking

Materials and tools

  • Silicone rubber moulds (available from Crafty Corner)
  • Polymer clay in various colours
  • Tin foil
  • Household oven

Before starting, read through all the steps together. Set up a clear work surface and make sure an adult is available to handle the baking stage.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Prepare the clay

Take a small amount of polymer clay out of the packet and seal the rest closed so it doesn’t dry out.

Roll, squeeze, and play with the clay in your hands until it becomes soft and easy to use. Polymer clay often feels hard at first, but it softens as it warms up.

This part is fun — let kids spend time getting used to how the clay feels.

Step 2: Fill the mould

Choose the colour of clay you want to use. Press the clay into the silicone mould, checking that it fills all the details.

If there is too much clay, remove it, break off a small piece, and try again. If there isn’t enough, simply add a little more.

Step 3: Flatten and rest

Press the clay firmly into the mould and flatten the top so it is level.

Leave the clay in the mould for about one hour before removing it. This helps the shape hold its detail when taken out.

Step 4: Remove the shapes

Turn the silicone mould upside down and gently bend it backwards. The clay embellishments should pop out easily.

If a piece sticks, bend the mould a little more rather than pulling on the clay.

Step 5: Bake the embellishments

(Adult supervision required)

Place the clay pieces onto a sheet of tin foil. An adult should place them into a household oven and bake at 145°C for 30 minutes.

Do not let children handle the oven or hot trays.

Step 6: Cool and use

Remove the embellishments from the oven and leave them to cool for at least 30 minutes.

Once cool, they are ready to use for scrapbooking, decorating picture frames, or adding to other craft projects.
