This sturdy upcycled shopper bag starts its life as offcut billboard banner, which gives the bag its strong, boxy structure and lets it carry real weight without losing shape. Skilled makers then layer the banner with a colourful patchwork of everyday plastic packaging that would otherwise sit in landfill for centuries, including pet food bags, washing powder and soap packaging, coffee bags, and the bright advertising plastic wrapped around bottled drinks. Because South Africa currently has no local process for recycling these mixed plastic composites, this packaging is almost impossible to recycle through conventional channels, so turning it into a bag is one of the few ways to keep it out of the ground.
Once the panels are built, the bag is finished with an outer layer of clear plastic sourced from large bedding bags, the oversized clear zipper bags that duvet suppliers use to package their stock. Wrapped over the patchwork, this clear layer protects the design underneath and gives every bag a glossy, showcase finish, so the pattern stays visible while the bag stays weatherproof.
Because each bag is built from whatever packaging came through that week, the colours and patterns shift from bag to bag, and no two are ever quite the same. That’s not a flaw, it’s the whole point: each one is a one-of-a-kind record of the waste stream it was rescued from.
