How to make a mosaic sign for valentines

Mosaic “I Love You” Heart

A decorative mosaic project combining mirror, colour, and message

This project creates a mosaic heart featuring raised “I love you” lettering, making it an ideal handmade gift for Valentine’s Day or other special occasions. The combination of mirror pieces, painted lettering, and tile grout gives the finished piece texture, contrast, and visual interest.

The process is structured but forgiving, making it well suited to relaxed crafting sessions where the focus is on creativity rather than precision.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Position and glue the lettering

Plan where you would like the resin letters to sit on the heart. Once you are happy with the layout, glue the letters onto the board one by one.

Add any additional embellishments at this stage, such as a small resin heart. Leave everything to dry for approximately 30 minutes.

Step 2: Paint the lettering

Once the glue has set and the letters are secure, paint them red using a thin paintbrush. Apply the paint carefully so it does not pool around the edges.

Wash the brush with water once finished and allow the paint to dry fully before moving on.

Step 3: Start the mosaic border

When the paint is dry and no longer rubs off, apply glue along the outer edge of the heart.

Starting with the border helps define the shape and gives these pieces more drying time, which makes it easier to place the remaining mosaic pieces later.

Step 4: Add mirror pieces

Place broken mirror pieces onto the glued border, pressing each piece gently and holding it for a few seconds to ensure it sticks.

Try to keep the pieces close together and within the edge of the board. Use the two-wheel cutter to trim mirror pieces to the size and shape you need.

Working neatly here will give the finished heart a clean outline.

Step 5: Fill the centre

Once the border is complete, apply glue to the inside section of the heart and begin placing tile or mirror pieces within the border.

Work in small sections so the glue does not dry before pieces are placed.

Step 6: Continue building the mosaic

Continue gluing pieces until the heart is mostly covered. At this stage, the design should begin to come together, but small gaps are normal and will be filled during grouting.

Grouting and finishing

After the glue has fully dried, grout the heart following the same method used in mosaic teddy bear on the moon

Once the grout has been applied and cleaned back, allow it to dry fully. Your mosaic “I Love You” heart is now ready to gift or display.
